Missed by the Masters

The game score below is taken from the tournament book and ChessGames.com. The players, whose names I have omitted to avoid embarrassing them, were prominent local masters. In the diagrammed position, Black played 8...a6. Do you see anything better?

  1. That was a doozy! Why did it happen? Maybe because the bishop was on the f3 square and not (say) e2?

  2. That's the only thing I can think of - that since the bishop was on a weird diagonal the players didn't realize that it didn't defend the knight on b5.

  4. I considered that, but I can't figure out a way that could have happened (e.g. a plausible transposition of moves).
