2012 Illinois Tour standings

Here are the complete standings with one event to go, the 2012 Illinois Class.

NM Tenzing Shaw and GM Nikola Mitkov lead the Open section with 22 points.  GM Dmitry Gurevich is right behind with 21½ points, and NM Jonathan Kogen and NM Sam Schmakel remain with striking distance of the title at 21 points.

Jim Froehlich seems very close to clinching the Reserve title at 28 points.  Joe Delay (23) and Michael Penway (22) are most likely battling for second.

And here are the leaders in the Reserve Scholastic section:

Jason Daniels wins Grade 2-3 section

162 players!!  Crosstable here.

Top-ranked Jason Daniels (1576) was held to a draw by Si Li (1019) in round 4, but won all other games to take clear first with 6½-½.  Shreya Mangalam, Sean Yu Li, Brian Gong, Kushal Mungee, and Ivan Mitkov tied for second with impressive 6-1 scores.

Gary Janssen and Donna Wallach directed for Bubbacat Chess.

Michael Auger repeats as U.S. Game/30 Champion

Michael Auger played his usual entertaining chess to repeat as U.S. Game/30 Champion.  Michael won his first four games then held a draw against FM Albert Chow to clinch.  NMs Matan Prilleltensky and Aleksandar Stamnov tied for second with 4-1, Chow and Charles McMillan tied for fourth.

Jason Flanders and Gee Leong tied for first in the Reserve section with 4-1 scores.  Jason Daniels and Alexander Hu tied for first in the Booster, also with 4-1.

An impressive performance by Illinois juniors this weekend!

Illinois State Scholastic Championships

The 2010 Illinois State Scholastic Championships drew 594 players from kindergarten to 8th grade to the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles last weekend, March 13-14.

Jason Daniels (1286) took the K-1 section with a perfect 7-0; David Wallach and Sean Yu Li tied for second with 6-1.

Matthew Stevens (1587) won the Grades 2-3 section with a perfect 7-0 score.  Chetan Reddy, Nathaniel Sobery, Akhil Kalghatgi, Randaheer Tripuraneni, and Rishav Sinha all tied for second with 6-1.

Bryce McClanahan (1791) grabbed the Grades 4-5 section with 7-0; Zhaozhi Li (1808), Conrad Oberhaus (1692), Ian Gilchrist (1567), Lorenzo Barbin (1543), and Abe Sun (1506) tied for second with 6-1.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, Yue Xu (1812) won the Grades 6-8 section, downing second place finisher Sam Schmakel (1960); Alex Bian (1796) and Samuel Heil (1528) also tied for second.

Jeff Wiewel and Gary Jannsen directed, assisted by Betsy Dynako, Erv Sedlock, Colley Kitson, Jeremy Von Hatten, Elizabeth Villaflor, Wayne Clark, James Greer, and Blair Machaj.  The event was organized by Machaj and Paul Raso of Illinois Chess Teachers.  Bill Barton served as bid liaison on behalf of the Illinois Chess Association.
