GM Nikola Mitkov held up the local honor this year. Here's his very nice win in the money round (finished just a few minutes ago).

a cool game from the World Open

The field is so top-heavy at the World Open that GMs have been playing each other from Round 2.  Yesterday, Illinois Co-Champion Mesgen Amanov took down prodigy Ray Robson in a bizarre Botvinnik Semi-Slav sideline.

In the GM-A, Shirov leads with 3-0; Nakamura and Carlsen are tied for second with 2.5.

Ray Robson is in a three-way tie for first in the GM-C section, all on 2.5.

Corus Round 1

For the next couple weeks, the eyes of the chess world will be on the Netherlands resort town of Wijk aan Zee.

Hikaru Nakamura and teenager Fabiano Caruana (Italy/Brooklyn) are playing in the A section (Carlsen, Anand, Kramnik, Ivanchuk...)  Two fan favorites won in round one: Loek van Wely (over Nigel Short) and Alexei Shirov (over Peter Leko).
