Number 247

White to play and win

I feel less guilty lifting this great stuff knowing that Reinfeld stole, too. Now that you've found the win (you have found the win, haven't you?), you should be able to figure out what famous game this position is based on.  (The position never occurred in the game.)

Hint: it's arguably the most famous game ever played in New Orleans.

If you're looking for an immediate win, I assume that you're thinking of 1.Rxe7 Rxe7 2.Rxe7 Qxe7 3.Qg4+, winning the rook on c8. However, this is refuted by 1...Qxe7! 2.Rxe7 (2.Qg4+ Kf8! doesn't help) Rc1+ and Black will mate on e1. As for the game's supposed antecedent, every Russian schoolchild knows that E.Z. Adams-Torre is a fake game. E.Z. Adams was an extremely weak player who never could have played such a game, and never claimed to have done so. See http://bit.ly/3T9XH

I could have said "the most famous fake game," but that would have given too much away!

Wow...it seems that both Reinfeld and I missed your cute shot! I'll post about that later.

It's not just you and Reinfeld. If you look at the link I provided above, you'll see that Torre (whom FIDE belatedly awarded the grandmaster title in 1977) also recommended Rxe7??
